MICKLEY PARISH Currently there are no proposals to change the Parish/Town Council setup. Haltwhistle, Hexham and Prudhoe have town councils. The remainder of the county elects Parish councils. Town councils have a Town Mayor, but the status of a Town Council is much the same as a Parish Council. Nearby villages Stocksfield, Ovingham, Bywell, Ovington, Wylam, Riding Mill etc. all have Parish Councils. Mickley Ward includes Mickley Square, West Mickley, High Mickley, Mount Pleasant, Cherryburn and Eltringham Farm. Before 1999 it also included Eltringham village and Hammerite Paint Works. The population is a little under one thousand with about 700 residents of voting age. Mickley was formerly part of Prudhoe Urban District Council and became part of Tynedale District in the local re-organisation in 1974. At the same time it became part of Prudhoe Town Council. In the 19th century the mining village of Mickley was on a par with Prudhoe, but the decline in mining saw the importance of the village decline. Prudhoe has subsequently grown in importance and with new housing in recent years has become the largest town in Tynedale. Changes to regional government this Autumn may lead to a larger role for Town and Parish Councils. Should Mickley elect its own Parish Council? There are many smaller Parish Councils. Or would Mickley benefit from being part of a larger more powerful Prudhoe Town Council? email your views to parish@mickley.plus.com |
