Hexham was without water for a number of days as the swollen River Tyne destroyed 2 water mains. It was very encouraging to see people deal with the disruption to their lives with good humour and a healthy community spirit. 

We recognise and praise the huge effort made by Northumbria Water to restore water to our homes.

Local Councillors Derek Kennedy and Colin Moss released a statement saying “Although Northumbria Water are not legally obliged to pay compensation it is good to see that they recognised the moral obligation to put something into the community.”

 Northumbria Water has contributed £150,000 to local projects, with community groups invited to bid for a grant. The successful groups will find out in April the amount of grant to be paid to them.

We are sure this money will be well spent and let us hope that Northumbria Water install robust water mains and pipes to prevent the risk of us seeing water bowsers on our streets in the future. 

The Environment Agency is responsible for flood defence work and we are hopeful they can introduce adequate barriers to protect the homes of the residents of Tynedale.
